Monthly Mastery #3 03/2022

Purpose:

  1. The Monthly Mastery studies are meant to sharpen your fundamentals.

  2. Regardless of the medium you choose to complete the study, it will hone your skills in values, forms and your understanding of light.

  3. Simple shapes helps develop precision and accuracy.

Directions:

  1. Study the reference, identify the light source and direction.

  2. Identify the value changes on each surface.

  3. Label the values 0 through 5. Let 0 represent the darkest value and 5 represent the lightest value. Do not go beyond 5, some surfaces may be the same value. [0, 1, 2] = Shadows, [3, 4, 5] = Lights

  4. Create your own lineart in any way that best suits you. If you want to improve your freehand drawing skills, sketch the reference minimum of three times.

  5. In your chosen medium, establish what tones you will use to represent each of your values [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

  6. Fill in the shapes with your corresponding value palette.

  7. Aim for full coverage, no canvas or paper showing through your layers.

  8. Now we are combining what we did in MM1 and MM2 with solid shadows and gradient form shadows. Pay close attention to how they mix

  9. Do not create any texture or details. I do not want to see wood grain. Only clean solid shapes and smooth gradients.

  10. Email me or use Discord to ask any questions you have. Email your final result to me for the live critique. There will also be the option to post the final on the Facebook Group when the live critiques are announced.
